Go Daddy Decides They Don’t Support SOPA After All

Popular web hosting service and domain registrar, Go Daddy, reverses their initial stance supporting SOPA, after losing over 21,000 domains on Friday alone. Angry customers flocked to other registrars in droves over the weekend, when word got around that the company officially supported the proposed legislation. Other high-profile customers threatened to leave, including Wikipedia’s co-founder Jimmy Wales and CEO Ben Huh of the Cheezburger humor websites.

In reality, Go Daddy CEO Warren Adelman reveals he’s not completely against SOPA. His latest statement simply expresses an admission that the law, as it stands today, needs some more tweaking, and Adelman has made statements about SOPA including “Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation–but we can clearly do better.” It’s clear the company remains committed to the basic principles of SOPA and wishes to take an active part in the legislation’s development.

Given the inconvenience of transferring domains or moving web hosting services from provider to provider, it appears much of the damage has already been done. I can’t envision many customers transferring domains back after they’ve moved to a competitor.
