One Poignant Picture For Man, One Giant Hold Pattern For Mankind

Science Fiction author Dani Kollin (The Unincorporated Man and associated sequels) managed to snag an amazing shot of one of the decommissioned Space Shuttles. Kollin was kind enough to allow us to share both his image and his thoughts here.

Tho there were thousands of people, I somehow got this angle of the Space Shuttle, people free. What I love about the shot is that it truly symbolizes the mothballing of the Shuttle project. That the ship appears to be heading into a storm, that the warehouse boxes are piled up next to it, that it’s in a parking lot – all speak to the end of an era and quite frankly to a certain loss of hope.

NASA’s ongoing Curiosity mission to Mars and Felix Baumgartner’s insane space jump show that man isn’t quite done with space, but there’s something to be said for the emotional hit of the shuttles becoming museum pieces.
