On The Cheap: Save Big On Marvel Comics Unlimited

It’s hard not to feel like we’re living in the age of the comic book geek. As someone who grew up reading them, it’s awesome to see the books everywhere. There are still some downsides for new fans though. Easily getting your hands on them is one, as are obnoxious “gatekeepers” who sneer at new readers for not being “fan enough” to read books they enjoy. Thankfully, people like that are few and far between, but if you want to have an easy source of comics and a way to show them you do indeed know your stuff, Marvel has the deal for you.

From now through October 16, Marvel is slashing the price on Marvel Comics Unlimited. For just $69, you can get one year of Marvel’s “all you can eat” digital comics plan. All you have to do is add the promo code SAVE30 at discount. With over 150,000 comics, MCU is the best way to catch up on classic story lines; be it to prep for the next movie, see what the one you just saw was based on, or simply catch on some quality superhero storytelling. You can access MCU via a browser or a dedicated iOS or Android app.

The only downsides are that you can only save six comics for offline reading at a time and that most new releases are not on there for some time. Although the latter has been changing; Rocket Racoon #1 was added the very day it was published and some others have showed up too. Of course, the strongest argument against doing this is that you’re only “renting” the comics  (Marvel and others do have more traditional online stores), but that’s because it’s the Netflix model, not the comic book shop model. It’s a good model too, especially if you’re someone who used to spend more than that a month on comics (like say, me).

If you know a Marvel fan, are one, or are quickly becoming one, this may be the perfect holiday gift. In other words:

And yes, this issue is on MCU.

Hmm. I wonder if they use reading stats on that as votes toward trade collections. Any idea?

FYI, I don’t know if it’s different because of the deal you talk about, but I can save up to 12 comics for offline reading.
