SnApp Judgments: FRG Deluxe

Every night at 12:15 AM Pacific, Amazon gives away a free paid app through their Amazon app store. As I am usually awake at 12:15 AM Pacific, why not let you know if today’s app is useful, or just more clutter in your app drawer?

Today’s free app is FRG Deluxe by Woo Games, which usually runs for $3.00. You ever play the old arcade game Smash TV by Williams? If you answered yes, then you’ve basically played FRG Deluxe. You play as a humanoid robot on a top-down playing field blasting everything in sight, using the touchscreen equivalent of two joysticks to control movement and shooting — left thumb controls your movement, right controls where you shoot at.

Problem is, it’s nowhere near as good as Smash TV. Which, in fairness, was an amazing game, even when it was ripping off wholesale from The Running Man and RobocopBig money! Big prizes! I love it! FRG probably isn’t that bad, it just doesn’t hold up well against a 20+ year old video game. I know my phone is capable of pumping out graphics as good, if not better, than the old game. Heck, I can even emulate the original on my phone. So why does this one look so flat and puny in comparison?

Come to think of it, why hasn’t whoever purchased the Smash TV rights in the Midway fire sale released it for mobile with a similar scheme to FRG? I’m guessing either EA or Warner Bros? In any event, to quote the game ripping off Robocop, “I’d buy that for a dollar!” Seriously, I’d pay a dollar for it. Maybe even $1.99.
