Social Media Takedown On Juneteenth When Paula Deen Found Being Racist

Paula Deen

We here at Techcitement aren’t usually judgmental folk. We leave that for BuzzFeed, Reddit, or Gawker. However, it’s not a far reach to say that the butter-pushing star of Food Network, Paula Deen is a truly awful person.

If you’re unfamiliar with Paula Deen, she’s spent a lifetime promoting high-fat, high-calorie diets that usually involve massive amounts of butter. Complex did a piece on her 10 deadliest recipes, which includes Deep Fried Cheesecake. In case you have no idea, that’s basically taking pure fat and sugar, and then deep frying it.

Deen was diagnosed with the sweet blood and hid it for three years whilst continuing to peddle her deep-fried butter recipes. To make matters worse, she promoted diabetes treatments without a shred of irony or regret.

Now, a lot of people working in the tech fields have a reputation for eating like five-year olds on sugar binges with credit cards. I’ve been guilty of this, playing the original Sim City all night while fueled on pizza and soda. So, I’ve tasted the Mountain Dew Red Alert. When Burger King asks me if I will have it my way, my resounding answer is “Hell, yes!” This means that Paula Deen’s awful dietary hypocrisy affects me, even if it’s as a sort of skewed mirror.

Deen’s latest scandal has come to light via all of the internet’s assorted orifices. BuzzFeed dropped this little bomb from a National Enquirer exclusive. (Yes, BuzzFeed recovered a National Enquirer piece. Stop pretending to look shocked.)

BuzzFeed's print edition. For realz, yo!

From the Enquirer report:

In a blockbuster world exclusive, The ENQUIRER rips the lid off a shocking racial scandal in which celebrity chef PAULA DEEN confesses to using the N-word on several occasions and even wanting black waiters to play the role of slave in a wedding party she was planning. In a disturbing May 17 legal deposition – which only The ENQUIRER has obtained — Paula also reveals stunning family secrets about booze and pornography. And it was all captured on video! Now, sources say that Paula’s own words could bring down the Food Network star’s $17 million business empire. The bombshell revelations came to light after one of Paula’s restaurant managers, Lisa Jackson, sued the popular TV star for discrimination in a whopping $1.2 million lawsuit.

Despite appearing on BuzzFeed and the National Enquirer, this actually happened next: CNN ran a piece on the case.

In her deposition, Deen alleged to have said some pretty awful things. The lawsuit states that she said,

Well what I would really like is a bunch of little n***ers to wear long-sleeve white shirts, black shorts and black bow ties. You know, in the Shirley Temple days, they used to tap dance around. Now, that would be a true Southern wedding wouldn’t it? But we can’t do that because the media would be on me about that.

And to defend it, Deen goes on to explain that she got the idea from a restaurant her husband and her had dined at saying,

The whole entire waiter staff was middle-aged black men, and they had on beautiful white jackets with a black bow tie… I mean, it was really impressive. That restaurant represented a certain era in America … after the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War…It was not only black men, it was black women … I would say they were slaves.

Want to read the case? Here’s the case in full. Go nuts.

You know who else gets sick from eating poorly and has high risk factors for diabeetus? African Americans. Can you guess what happens when this news drops on Juneteenth?

This is what happens when you put the words Paula, Deen, and 'sexy' into Google.

Twitter happens.

From the previous CNN article:

Her company issued a statement Thursday saying Deen used the epithet, but in a “quite different time” in American history.

“She was born 60 years ago when America’s South had schools that were segregated, different bathrooms, different restaurants and Americans rode in different parts of the bus. This is not today.”

Techcitement would like to applaud Paula Deen’s company for hiring someone obviously recovering from some sort of traumatic head wound to write its press releases. There is no other excuse for passing off this kind of sloppy, deep-fried horseshit as reasoning.
