Back to the Future 2 has become the litmus test for whether or not we’ve actually entered “the future.” It looks like we may be one step closer to entering that reality — a team in France has made a hoverboard.
That said, the device doesn’t have “the POW-ah” to float more than 2cm off the ground, let alone over water. And it only works on a 5m track, and from what I can tell (sorry, virtually every article about this is in French, and je ne parle pas français), requires a steady stream of liquid nitrogen.
That said, Alain Sacuto, director of the physics department at Paris 7 University, and his team built a board that uses superconductivity to propel riders across a 5m track from a height of 2cm. That’s more than you’ve done this week.
