QuakeCon Magnitude Is Over 9000

Another year, another glorious three days of QuakeCon. Sadly, last Saturday marked the end to what might be the most memorable gaming convention I’ve attended yet. Packed full this year, booths such as Eternal Fate (with some of the nicest developers I’ve ever met), Doom 3 3D, Triad, and oh, yes, Dishonored, lured what was labeled as the biggest attendance yet for the notoriously nerdy gathering. Alienware was there of course, showcasing a plethora of games amongst bleachers full of fans, including Smite, an up and coming third-person MOBA.

Hulk is apparently into gaming and bondage this go around. Still neat though.

But this year had some really “rats off to ya!” showcases. Ventrillo, the premier group voice communication program used in tournaments and multiplayer games,  gave away a 2012 Ford Shelby Gt500 Coupe. John Carmack, co-founder of id Software (maker of  id computer games Commander Keen, Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, Quake, and Rage) spoke at a panel conference. And the guys from Bethesda Game Studios showed off Skyrim modding. But the neatest thing at QuakeCon was the virtual reality booth using Doom 4. Now, you can really zone out when playing games. Take that, needy girlfriend!

Of course there was the legendary BAWLS Chug and BYOC (think Fast and the Furious, but with custom desktops). This year packed so many gamers that flocks of people were still trying to get in on the last day. QuakeCon sported the expected all-star lineup of games, upcoming game previews, and guest speakers, but the icing on the cake was the PC Perspective Hardware Workshop brought to you by MSI. Not only did the company go over key elements of building your own computer, something everyone could stand to learn, but MSI gave away over 100 different pieces of computer hardware.

For those of you that have never been to QuakeCon, be sure to check it out next year. Until then, keep your eyes peeled here at Techcitement for the upcoming titles this year brought.
