Skylanders + Big Planet + Disney = Disney Infinity

Disney Infinity

On January 15, 2013, Disney Interactive announced via press release its newest video game project, Disney Infinity.

Essentially, this upcoming title features a line of collectible figures that erupt into photonic life on the TV (or handheld device) when placed on the Infinity Base. There’s an initial lineup of 17 character figures that will be released, but we all know that Disney fans are insatiable. There will be more to come.

Don't hate me, Disney, but the Portal of Power is way cooler.

Disney Infinity will feature a number of different worlds, each “true to property experiences,” for the different Disney and Pixar characters. The lands of Toy Story, Monsters Inc., and The Incredibles, among others, are ripe fruits of rich intellectual property begging to be tasted again. Blasting through the Play Sets (levels), players solve puzzles, fight monsters, relish in reified nostalgia, and, best of all, “[collect] unique characters, vehicles, and gadgets… saving them to a virtual ‘Toy Box.’” Using this Toy Box, players can build their own virtual world with collected items and share them with other players online and offline, much like Little Big Planet. I can’t wait to play through the user-generated content explosion after release.

“Jack! Did you see that guy’s face?”

While it does appear to be a blatant rip-off of Skylanders, I can’t very well curse a new game console (Xbox) for coming out after, and in opposition to, another (PlayStation), can I? I might prefer one console over another, but at the end of the day, it’s this kind of competition that drives innovation. Plus, it gives me an excuse to purchase new toys anda new video game.

The Disney Infinity Platform Includes:

  • Disney Infinity Interactive Pieces – Initially, a line of 40 collectible interactive pieces will be introduced that allow players to expand and customize their play experiences.
  • Disney Infinity Interactive Character Figures – Seventeen character figures allow players to experience a variety of their favorite characters in true-to-property experiences and in Toy Box mode.
  • Disney Infinity Base – When figures are placed on the Infinity Base, they unlock the world and play experiences of Disney Infinity.
  • Disney Infinity Power Discs – Interactive discs can be placed on the Infinity base to power up characters and Toy Box with unique powers, customizations, and gadgets.

The title will be available on all major platforms: PS3, Wii, Wii U, Xbox 360, and Nintendo 3DS.

So, forgive me for this bit of exclamation, but I can’t wait to play as Jack Skellington!
