‎Nokia Better Have Some Awesome Internals

feat-bundle2

Nokia, Nokia, Nokia, what have you been doing since 2007? How could the world’s largest premier smartphone manufacturer have fallen so far out of grace? What happened to the days of the N95, E90, and N70? Remember when everyone had Nokia phones on their belt holsters?

Since the advent of the iPhone, Nokia has done almost nothing to try to stay relevant. The lackluster N97, enthusiast-only tablet NX00 series, and N8 have all done little to stop Nokia’s market share from plummeting into obscurity. Nokia might have had a chance when it announced a partnership with Intel to merge Moblin and Maemo into Meego.  However, the first Nokia device spawned from that union, the gorgeous N9, is also the last. Nokia gave up on the Meego relationship before fully investing in the Intel relationship, instead laying all its eggs in Microsoft’s basket with the Windows Phone 7. And we’ll see the first fruits of that union bright and early tomorrow morning.

Nokia has got to bring it and bring it big. Nokia has to differentiate itself in terms of hardware and software, propelling itself back into relevancy. Especially in terms of their internals, Nokia has been lagging a year behind its competitors. Clock speeds of processors have been lower, less RAM has been used, the utter lack of LTE, and general lack of innovation in terms of hardware has really slowed Nokia down. Even the N9, just released in Europe, is running last year’s TI OMAP 3630 1GHz SoC, featured in the original Droid X. At least it has 1GB of RAM, but frankly, that’s just not enough.

So tomorrow, Nokia needs to blow everyone away. There needs to be gorgeous hardware that not only competes with the status quo, but shows what exactly Nokia has been working on for the past year. Now, due to Microsoft’s Chassis specifications, we might be treated to a regular old WVGA display and a single core processor, but Nokia should definitely treat us to the same quality ClearBack AMOLED display on the N9 and the best available single-core Qualcomm processor. But equally important to important insides, the new Nokia Windows Phones needs to have the lust factor to bring WP7 to the mainstream audience. The software, on Microsoft’s part, is already pretty much there. Throw in some good ol’ Nokia Maps with turn by turn directions and I’ll be happy.

There are also some awful rumors that Nokia will be waiting until early next year to bring their phones to the US so they can concentrate on Europe. Hopefully, that isn’t true; both for Nokia’s own sake and so there can be some competitive Windows Phones in the U S of A.

So, here’s to seeing something lust worthy out of Nokia in a few hours or else they might be forever shunted into irrelevancy.
