Peek Reminds Us About The Catch Of Lifelong Service

For those unfamiliar with Peek, the device was meant to be an email-only handheld, and the company eventually added a second device that exclusively worked on Twitter too. Peek’s service was provided via T-Mobile’s network and you could even buy a lifelong service plan for $299. The thing about lifelong coverage is it refers to the life of the product, not the user. As of the end of last month, the Peek network has gone dark. I’m honestly shocked it took this long. I’ve long shared Alton Brown’s disdain for single-use devices. His focus is the kitchen, mine is in your pocket.

But not Alton Brown's pockets. I draw the line somewhere.

With smartphones getting cheaper and cheaper to the point that you can even get 4G handsets for free on contract, the idea that someone would want to carry around an extra device solely for email is more than a bit odd. The moral of the story: when forking down big bucks for lifetime service, save it for products that will outlive your average housepet at the very least.
