Quiet Refresh Brings Apple iMac Updates

iMac

Earlier this week, Apple announced a refresh of the 21″ and 27″ iMac. While not an unexpected update to the product line, Apple released it with little fanfare, surprising many of the Mac faithful who awaited official announcements of new Mac systems in October. The update breaks down in the following ways:

The popular all-in-one desktop computers have new fourth generation Haswell Intel processors, updated graphics capabilities, support for the latest wireless networking standards, and faster PCIe flash storage options. Each system comes standard with 8 GB of memory and a 1 TB hard drive, but customers may opt for configurations with as much as 32 GB of memory and a hard drive capacity of 3 TB. Users preferring pure flash disk storage can order the iMac with as much as 1 TB of solid-state drive capacity.

As per usual, Apple’s standard offerings include a low and a high spec option for a 21″ or a 27″ iMac. Prices start at $1,200 for a 21″ iMac with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel i5 processor. The high spec variation costs an additional $200 but bumps the processor speed up to a 2.9 GHz i5 and discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M video versus the integrated Iris Pro Intel graphics of the lower end model.

The 27″ iMac’s pricing starts at $1,799 and includes a 3.2 GHz quad-core Intel i5 processor plus discrete NVIDIA GeForce GT GTX 775M graphics with 1 GB of video memory. For $200 more, customers can move up to the high spec version where the processor is bumped up to 3.4 GHz and the NVIDIA video is increased to 2 GB of video memory.

Does this quiet, but seemingly substantial update, impress you enough to consider and upgrade of your own?
