T-Mobile To Revive True Unlimited Mobile Internet

My first cellphone was a T-Mobile cellphone, back when the company was called VoiceStream. Back then, it was the best value for wireless data usage. You could hook any Windows Mobile or Palm Device with a modem to what was meant to be its low-end data service for feature phones, T-Zones. Even after T-Zones officially shut down, this little workaround got you free or low-cost unlimited data.

Sure it was slow, but it was faster than nothing.

In these modern, data-hungry times, carriers can’t afford that sort of thing. Every major carrier — except Sprint — has added a data cap; if you use too much bandwidth, your 4G speeds drop down to 2G for the rest of your billing cycle. T-Mobile must be feeling nostalgic, because it’s bringing back truly unlimited data. It won’t be cheap because cost for a “value” user will be $20 and will run up to $30 if you’re using a non-value plan. You also don’t have wireless hotspot as an option with that plan, but how many people really use that anyway? There will be an “all you can eat” voice/data/texting plan for $90, which sure beats Verizon’s $120 rate and Sprint’s $110.

Expect this to go live on September 5, along with plans for T-Mobile’s really-we-mean-it-this-time 4G LTE network. Will customers care enough to come back to T-Mobile?
