Microsoft Office Sort-Of Comes To iOS For Sort-Of Free

Microsoft Office 365

A long-stranding rumor has become reality with the fairly silent launch of Microsoft Office for iOS. If you already have an Office 365 account, the app is free. Don’t have one? Get one, wait for iWork in the Cloud, or use Google Drive like the rest of mankind.

In a moment of WTF, the app is scaled for iPhone, not iPad. Yes, you can use the 2x button to scale up, but what are you thinking, Microsoft? The inclusion of an iPad-centric app would have made far more sense, as a tablet is far better for productivity in a bring your own device kind of way than a smartphone. While I have written entire articles and scripts on phones with screens as small as 3.5″, I don’t think any sane person actually wants that.

I haven’t used this term in some time, but I hereby dub Office for iPhone as a Solution in Need of a Problem. Between this and the Xbox One, Microsoft is becoming quite adept at giving customers what they don’t want. Step it up, MS.
