Tablet Thursday Digest: Lawyering Up

popcorn

Sure, there were little stories like HP officially dropping the Touchpad’s price to $399, but for all extents and purposes there’s really only one bit of tablet news this week: the heating up of the lawsuit between Apple and Samsung.

Apple managed to get an injunction from a German court blocking the sale of the Galaxy Tab 10. This injunction impacts not just Deutschland, but in fact the entire EU (except the Netherlands). Coming just a week after the device’s launch, this is a heck of a blow to Samsung. Samsung commented on their blog in response, stating basically “we’ll see you in court.”

Apple seems to want to see other tablet makers in court, as they’re also suing Motorola over the Xoom.

I’m not a lawyer and don’t play one one TV either, but it seems to me like the Xoom is a bit of a stretch. No buttons, different OS, and not as thin and light. However, considering that the Galaxy Tab was basically sent back to the shop to compete directly with the iPad 2, that has a bit more potential to be a big deal.

I also find it interesting that Apple has gone after Samsung. I think it shows that they consider the Tab a legitimate threat to their EU market.

Either way, this is going to make for some entertaining legal tussles. We’ll keep you posted.
