It’s an advancement in surveillance technology that most of us knew was coming eventually, and it comes from the video monitoring division of Hitachi Kokusai Electric.

This surveillance camera system can search through data on 36 million faces in one second. Developed by Hitachi Kokusai Electric, the system can automatically detect a face from either surveillance footage or a regular photo, and search for it.

The search results are displayed immediately, showing thumbnail images of potential candidates. When a thumbnail is selected, the associated recorded surveillance footage can be viewed, so users can quickly review the persons actions before and after the image was taken.

On one hand, I can see this as a positive advancement in some industries. For example, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) could certainly integrate a nationwide airport video database with real-time results on suspicious traveler queries without alerting anyone to the potential problem until after the suspicions have been confirmed. On the other hand, that would mean a nationwide airport video database with instant information on every traveler from now to eternity, and a TSA worker looking people up because they looked at him funny, and hey, is that your wife, sir, because that’s not the woman you were traveling with last July, look here’s video of you kissing her during your layover in Atlanta. Have a good day, sir.

Oh, who am I kidding? It’ll probably just be used to see if the person you cybersexed with last Tuesday afternoon is back on the network.
