On The Cheap: Take Advantage Of WiMax’s Death And End Your Sprint Contract

Sprint Sign

WiMax was supposed to be the future of wireless data. Instead, it tanked and the world has moved on to LTE. Sprint Wireless was the only U.S. provider to invest in the tech, and it’s due for shelving eventually. Sprint has changed contract terms reflecting this.

The existing WiMax user choices are to transition to an unnamed “standard LTE device” or a contract termination without having to pay an early termination fee. The latter is what grabbed my attention. There haven’t been any new WiMax phones in some time, but I am personally aware of several people using their older models for one reason or another. Maybe it was free with contract. Maybe they got it as a hand me down. Maybe they just didn’t know. This deal would let any of those people break free.

I also hazard that one can take advantage of this in other ways. Find an old WiMax phone, put it on your account via Sprint.com, use it for a day or so, and then call and ask to cancel. This would have to involve careful timing, as Sprint has yet to announce a cut-off date. In fact, it may just be worth waiting things out.
