It’s The End Of The World, Dropbox Is Down!

Dropbox

UPDATE: Thirty minutes into the outage and Dropbox remains down with no ETA from support on when it will be back up.

About 15 minutes ago, I tried getting a Dropbox share link for a PowerPoint slide deck I was working on in PowerPoint. It didn’t work, and then I noticed that it wasn’t synchronizing with the cloud. I tried accessing Dropbox.com and saw the following message:

5-30-2013 10-17-14 AM

Then, I thought OMG what do I do without Dropbox? Apparently, the rest of the internet thinks the same thing. In the few minutes it’s taken me to get this far, a Twitter search for Dropbox has shown over 100 new tweets.

Dropbox support tweeted the following:

5-30-2013 10-21-14 AM

Website status tracker Is It Down Right Now? is also reporting that Dropbox is down for everyone.

I’ve been using Dropbox to store files for so long and using its sharing capabilities that I have to remember how to get files between systems at work without Dropbox. I’m kind of at a loss. Hopefully, this issue will get resolved soon and we’ll have a good explanation of what has happened.

With companies trying to move everything to the cloud, this is my biggest issue with not wanting my graphics software and my videogamming moved there. Things happen. I can be a hacking, software glitch, weather/natural disaster, etc. When these sites or servers tank, users are left with nothing but waiting for them to get up and running again. Meanwhile projects don’t get turned in or features can’t be used. The cloud is not safe for work. You can be a hard, dedicated worker and miss your deadline through no fault of your own.
