On The Cheap: Have An iPhone 4 Or 4S? Get A Free iPhone 5

Let’s not kid ourselves. The next generation iPhone is coming soon. Apple’s handset product cycle is simple, after all: Come out with a phone, come out with another a year later that is a slight improvement, and then come out with an even better one a year after that that is totally worth upgrading for. This works no matter what model you start with; the best deal happens when you wait every two years. Coincidentally, that’s when cell contracts expire. It’s almost like it was planned or something.

Unlike most smartphones, iPhone pricing is stable too. The new base model will be $199, last year’s model will be $99, and the one before that will be free. Beyond that, it’s fairly rare to find good deals on iPhones, which is what makes Best Buy’s current promotion so great.

From now until June 30, anyone who brings in an iPhone 4 or 4S can get at least a $150 gift card to use toward a mobile phone. Oh and look at that, Best Buy dropped the iPhone 5 price to $150.  Walmart has also dropped prices to $130, but free is always better.

Two caveats: About 320 Best Buys are in areas where laws require you to have an original receipt and that the product be from a Best Buy. This rule has something to do with pawn shop regulations. So, check your shop before bringing your iPhone in. Secondly, re-upping for two years means that you won’t be able to get the 5S, 6, or whatever else the new model will be called. You have to decide if getting a free phone today is worth not getting a deal for the newest iPhone later. Consider though that the leap from the 4/4S to the 5 is good jump ahead in technology already.

One final closing thought: Best Buy takes other trade-in phones as well. You could always bulk that gift card up.
