SnApp Judgments: Jamie Oliver 20 Minute Meals

Every night at 12:15 AM Pacific, Amazon gives away a free paid app through their Amazon app store. As I am usually awake at 12:15 AM Pacific, why not let you know if today’s app is useful, or just more clutter in your app drawer?

Today’s free app is Jamie Oliver 20 Minute Meals by Zolmo, which ordinarily runs for $7.99. Now obviously, just like the last time Amazon offered up a cookbook for a free app, I can’t do much to test whether or not these recipes are any good. However, after just a cursory glance, the interface blows the hell out of the previous offering.

Granted, being greeted with a message that I’m going to have to download an additional 80 megs of video is always a little freaky. But the fact that the video is there is nice. Oddly, it seems to run not in the application, but in your default video player. Part of me wants to say that’s lazy, but on the other hand, at least I know the video controls are going to work.

Unlike iCookbook, the text is large and easy to read. Occasionally, sound clips of Oliver will play as you swipe through individual instructions. If you don’t have the volume up, you will miss those. That probably wouldn’t be an issue though, as there’s a ton of video, so the volume probably would have been up anyway.

The app is actually pretty cool. I am tempted to try out some of these recipes. Now if only there wasn’t something about Oliver’s voice that didn’t make me want to stick the pointy end of forks in my ears.

Also, it kills me that there is no apostrophe s in the title of this app. Absolutely kills me.
