SnApp Judgments: Swiftkey X

Every night at 12:15 AM Pacific, Amazon gives away a free paid app through their Amazon app store. As I am usually awake at 12:15 AM Pacific, why not let you know if today’s app is useful, or just more clutter in your app drawer?

Jeremy Goldstone is off geeking out at San Diego Comic-Con, so today’s SnApp Judgments comes from me, and it’s a great deal this time around. Amazon’s free app today is SwiftKey X, by TouchType Ltd., normally $3.99. Replacement keyboards are a surprisingly competitive market on Android, with a wide range of innovative options. Developers have realized that typing with a touchscreen is slow and frustrating, and the variety of keyboards all try to make it simpler and faster. Swiftkey’s take on the concept is predictive typing. Not just the word you’re typing now. Even the stock Android keyboard does that. No, Swiftkey X tries to predict the next word you’re going to type, too, saving you valuable seconds by not having to tap at all. When you set up the keyboard it can learn your personal writing style from your Facebook, Twitter, and Gmail accounts, as well as your SMS history on your device. You can opt out of any of these choices if you wish. As time goes by, it continues to learn and improve its predictions.

SwiftKey X is designed for phones only, so the Honeycomb tablet users out there have to shell out $4.99 if they want Swiftkey Tablet X.

Because this is a learning keyboard, I didn’t think it would be fair to do a full review without giving it a chance to learn a little. But at the low price of free, Swiftkey X is certainly worth a try. For more details, check out our upcoming Android Keyboard Rundown. We’ll be comparing some of the more popular and innovative keyboards available, including the ever-popular Swype. If there are any contenders you want to see, let us know in the comments.
