Google, You’re Not (Alone) In Kansas Anymore

Wicked

With all the hype circulating over Google’s gigabit fiber rollout, it’s easy to forget that availability remains somewhat limited in the cities scheduled for the service. Despite Olathe, Westwood, Westwood Hills and Mission Hills, Kansas on the short list for Google Fiber, nearby Lawrence (about 29 miles from Olathe) isn’t scheduled for coverage.

In what may be the first sign of Google Fiber sparking competition that doesn’t come from other giant corporations like AT&T, Wicked Fiber appears on the scene to offer a similar service. Like Google, Wicked promises no usage caps and symmetric gigabit speeds, as well as copying Google’s method of connecting the neighborhoods first who put in the most pre-orders.

Unfortunately, this ISP is a company formerly known as FreeNET, known for a relatively poor track record of delivering on promises. (They’re responsible for “free WiFi” around the city, filled with hotspots not maintained for years.) Hopefully, with the rebranding and new focus, Wicked Fiber can get Lawrence, KS on the internet fast-track and won’t end up leaving people in the pit stop.
