PlayStation Vita, Amazon And Best Buy Are Ready To Take Your Money

Biding its time

Fresh on the heels of rumors sparked by a Blockbuster UK flier that Sony’s PlayStation Vita was ready for an October 28 release date, now both Amazon and Best Buy are taking pre-orders for the next generation handheld platform. Amazon and Best Buy have the Vita’s price listed as $249.99 (WiFi only) and $299.99 (WiFi + 3G). The unconfirmed shipping date listed on Amazon is December 31 of this year, while Best Buy Canada has March 30 2012.

Earlier this month, Nintendo announced a surprise price cut for the 3DS from $249.99 to $169.99 in lieu of sluggish sales. The PlayStation Vita has a well-entrenched competitor in the 3DS, which while under-performing to expectations has still managed to ship an estimated 4.32 million units this year. Any of the possible shipping dates would leave the 3DS without a major platform competitor through the end of the calendar year. Sony is scheduled to make the Vita’s release date official in September.
