SnApp Judgments: Overkill

Every night at 12:15 AM Pacific, Amazon gives away a free paid app through their Amazon app store. As I am usually awake at 12:15 AM Pacific, why not let you know if today’s app is useful, or just more clutter in your app drawer?

Today’s free game is Overkill by Creative Mobile OU, which usually runs for $1.99. As far as I can tell, it has nothing to do with the song Overkill by Motörhead. It’s a side scrolling shoot in the vein of games like R-Type — your spaceship flies forever to the left, and you have to kill everything in your way. Not bad as far as these kinds of games go, but it’s emblematic as to why cell phones generally make lousy traditional gaming platforms.

All your movement controls are motion-based, so inevitably, there’s going to be that point where the phone doesn’t know you are trying to tilt it down. There’s no gun button either — your standard cannons are set to “always on,” giving you control only over special weapons and shields. If this were on a Gameboy instead of a cell phone, you’d throw the game across the room. But on a cell phone, it ain’t bad. Funny how that works.
