SnApp Judgments: PBA Bowling 2

Every night at 12:15 AM Pacific, Amazon gives away a free paid app through their Amazon app store. As I am usually awake at 12:15 AM Pacific, why not let you know if today’s app is useful, or just more clutter in your app drawer?

Today’s free app is PBA Bowler 2 by Concrete Software, Inc. Normally, it runs for $2.99, so as things go, this is more of a premium-priced game. It shows. For a 3D bowling game on a cell phone, the game has more than decent graphics. There are a ton of options as well, most of which I did not bother to try out because I have to write this before I go to bed. Apparently, you get to play against actual PGA bowlers as well, although I just played a quick practice round.

While the game looks nice, I’m not sure the game play holds up. The basics are simple – pick your bowling ball, pick your starting spot, throw the ball by either flicking the screen or jerking the phone, and then put spin on the ball by tilting the phone. Except physics don’t really feel like they enter into the equation much. Maybe I’m just a better virtual bowler than real one, but I was picking up at least spares consistently. It lacks the challenge needed to keep me interested. I might try it again, but there’s a decent chance this app will go into the delete pile. To quote The Big Lebowski, “Mark it zero.”
