Meet The 2DS: Nintendo Serves Up Dual Screens, Hold The 3D

Nintendo 2DS

There may be a console war on, but Nintendo is pretty much the undisputed champ of the handheld gaming arena at the moment. As long as you ignore casual gaming, that is. Gaming for iOS and Android have come a long way from the original monochromatic Gameboy, but there’s something about dedicated handheld gaming hardware that makes people swoon.

Nintendo has decided to add another handheld to the market in the form of the 2DS. Due out October 12, the dual-screen system looks a lot like a 3DS laid flat. Speaking of flat, there is no 3D feature, which is a huge plus for someone like myself, whose eyes don’t work with most 3D tools. Nintendo’s new handheld device also has two cameras, a single speaker, an SD slot (it comes with 4 GB), and a price tag of $129. That’s a bit cheaper than a 3DS, giving users access to the entire DS game library, including the 3D ones, with a lower cost of entry.

With the Wii U, 3DS, and now 2DS, Nintendo is clearly moving forward with a two-screen design philosophy. Will users snap it up, or will their eyes wander?
