Media Molecule, the developers behind Little Big Planet, are now preparing to release Tearaway, an original adventure game set in an open world and made entirely of paper. Designed to use all available features, this PlayStation Vita exclusive will give players a uniquely tactile experience.

Players traverse a beautiful paper wilderness full of puzzles and challenges inspired by whimsical stories and folklore. Media Molecule designed Tearaway as a buddy-movie style adventure in that players not only control the envelope-headed messengers Iota and Atoi, each carrying a message just for you, but also come to their rescue by poking fingers through the back screen using the Vita’s rear touch feature. Reinforcing the relationship between the world of the game and the real world, players will notice glimpses of their own environment captured through the rear view camera.

Lead designer Rex Crowle spoke at a South by Southwest panel about his motivations for creating this game saying, “I don’t like things that react in a digital way. I like things that you can feel in your hands when you’re interacting with them and almost see the hands of the person that created them in the final product experience.”  With Tearaway, Crowle may have achieved his goal by creating, “a game that feels like you’re holding [the] adventure in your hands.”

Players can look forward to their adventures with Iota and Atoi starting soon as Tearaway is set to release later this year.
