Augmented Reality Prevents Death From Boredom

Poor

You know how everything is Japan is way cooler (see: giant robot)? The folks over at Salad, or Particle At Rest, have developed a new amenity designed to reduce a common health risk associated with riding trains: boredom. Lush landscapes of rolling hills and grand blue skies won’t feel so drab thanks to an interactive Augmented Reality window.

The horrific monsters are unfortunately absent, but at least these harmless flitting images will satiate the passenger’s ADD for a moment. Throwing together openFramworks, a GPS, and the Kinect, passengers use their interactive touch screen window to populate the scenery with fun objects like hot air balloons or people riding bikes.

Touch the train window ! from SALAD a.k.a. PARTICLE AT REST on Vimeo.

These fun little pictures don’t revolutionize riding the train, but they do offer a fun and silly distraction until the next stop. I’d rather drop boulders on cars, but this will tide me over for now.
