The Nexus Q is a strange device at $299 for a simple media streamer that doesn’t have half the functionality of a much cheaper Apple TV or Roku box. Perhaps that’s why Google has delayed the launch of the overpriced sphere, sending emails out to people who pre-ordererd the device that they’ll have to wait while Google is “work[ing] on making it even better.”
Obviously, Google has realized that the potential of the hardware of the Nexus Q (which is essentially a Galaxy Nexus) should be leveraged a bit more than as a glorified streamer from your Android phone. Google will hand out a free Nexus Q to anyone who pre-ordered as an olive branch. I guess early adopters don’t always get screwed in the end.
Hopefully, the new features Google plans to roll out will make the Nexus Q a worthwhile purchase for an Android household, but we’ll have to wait until it ships to find out.
