On The Cheap: Amazon Brandishes Fire Stick; Shoots Special Price At Prime Members

Despite Apple calling the Apple TV a “hobby”, TV streamers are big business. Amazon has been doing a great job of selling the still-fairly-new Fire TV system. Voice search and integration with Prime Instant Video have been big points in favor, but not so much the $99 price tag. After all, you can get same shows on your TV by using a $35 Chromecast or a $50 Roku stick, right? Amazon knows this too, which is why the internet giant has announced the Fire TV Stick, a $39 stick version of the TV solution. For that price, you get a small stick, 8 GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM, and a dedicated remote. While the remote doesn’t appear to include voice search, the companion app for your phone does. Another nice feature of the Fire TV Stick is that it can screen mirror from your phone or tablet, assuming it supports Miracast, and more do than you might think. As near as I can tell, the only reason to get the $99 model is the dedicated gaming horsepower.

The most impressive bit of this Fire TV Stick announcement is the pricing deal. For the next two days, Amazon Prime members can get the Fire Stick for $19, a $20 savings. Bluntly, if you’ve even considered cord-cutting, this is too good a deal to pass up.
