TiVo Slide Remote: Get It While You Can

TiVo Slide 2

Dear TiVo,

As any of my dedicated readers know, I love your service. Shortly after my husband and I had our first child, we realized we needed a DVR if we were ever going to watch TV again, and we welcomed out first TiVo box to the family. When the Slide remote came on the market, I was excited. As a regular TV watcher, I knew the Slide would make it far easier for me to find the content I want on my TV. I mean, don’t get me wrong, TiVo is awesome. Being able to search for and record shows I want? Awesome. But I absolutely hate how long it takes to type everything with a standard remote. Priced at $80, the Slide remote was tempting, but not necessary for every day TiVo use.

Then, the world changed. Suddenly my Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, and YouTube accounts were all available through you. That means I use the standard remote to peck for letters almost every day as I search for titles. And every single day I think “I wish I had a Slide remote!”

Well, now I have one. It came today, not 15 minutes ago (thanks for the review unit, by the way!), and I eagerly tested it out in the various interfaces. The remote works likes a dream. Setting it up took about two minutes (and a good 30 seconds of that was finding the USB slot in the back of the TiVo box). I love the Slide so so so much. The backlit keys come in handy as well for late-night TV watching. So, I have to ask, TiVo, my love, now that my TiVo box is the entryway into the Narnia of my online viewing entertainment, why are you discontinuing this most magical of remotes? Shouldn’t this be the time to hype a remote that makes it easier to use the add-on services you supply? TVs are only going to require more input in the coming years. Why are you killing this product right as it’s needed most?

I close this letter happy to have the Slide, but a little heartbroken that it will soon be discontinued. The remote isn’t on your site anymore, and I have only found a few through online retailers. I hope that this means you have something even better coming. Your loved ones deserve nothing less.

Sincerely happy yet frustrated,
Dani Weiss-Bronstein
