Almost everyone has gotten used to seeing that little hashtag (#) in posts. Used on Twitter to denote a topic, the hashtag manages to show up elsewhere too. Maybe your friends cross post or maybe they’ve simply gotten used to using it. Facebook is betting on the latter.
The Wall Street Journal alleges that the social network giant is thinking of adding hashtags. There’s no timeline posited, and this could be something someone is messing with to discover if it’s viable. If true though, it shows that Facebook is taking notice of Twitter, which has less active users but an active ecosystem.
How much work is even needed? As the article points out, Instagram already uses hashtags, and Facebook acquired that ages ago. Once a mobile-only phenomena, Instagram feeds are now visible from the web, which means someone at Facebook had to get under the hood.
It will be interesting to see if and when Facebook brings hashtags to the platform, especially if the option will be monetized.
