Dani Doles Out Advice: Yahoo Needs To Re-invent Itself

DaniDolesOutAdvice

Hi, Yahoo! I still use you for my email because you’re a comfortable old friend. But there’s not much else I want from you. I don’t want Yahoo! search, Yahoo! news, or Yahoo! chat. So, how do you become relevant again? People have moved on from your email service. Gmail is all set with Google, and Hotmail/MSN (a.k.a. Outlook/SkyDrive) is looking to make a comeback by picking up users with various Windows products, but what are you doing? Or, really, what should you be doing? You should be looking for products that people rely on, buy them, and find a way to integrate them with what you already have.

Dani’s advice: Popular services that come to mind and may need a boost include SugarSync. You can’t compete against behemoths like Google and Microsoft forever. You’re going to want a way to compete with all the cloud businesses that are floating around, and cloud-computing is the wave of the future. Jump on it. Pick up a big and dedicated user base to fold into what you have, and this may be where you excel. Piece this new venture together with Flickr and your fantasy football service, and you’re working towards relevance again.
