People Can’t Stop Talking About Google Babble

Considering that Google has revamped the way people connect with the creation of both Gmail and Google Voice, there’s one major area where the company has had a failure to communicate. Google has tried standalone messaging clients with Google Talk and Google Messenger. Then there are the chat add-ons to other services, like Hangout and talk for Google+, Chat for Drive, and Google Voice’s texting solution. While all of these tools let you talk to other people, they don’t talk to each other and that’s a real problem for end users.

According to Geek.com, Google may be on the verge of presenting a solution. Google is rumored to be prepping a new service called Babble. Based on an the open XMPP chat solution, Google will apparently lock down that open nature to make it exclusively for the services in the company’s vast portfolio. In other words, you can track your Google conversation without wondering which Google tool you were using, but don’t expect to be able to connect to AOL’s AIM service while you’re at it.

Or as I call it, Inertia Messenger

The Babble name has led some to wonder if Google Translate might be folded in as well, as it invokes the Babelfish of both Hitchhikers Guide to The Galaxy fame as well as the famous internet translation tool, now part of Bing. This is less than likely, as Translate is not a messaging app, but the app has been partially baked into Chrome so it is certainly possible. More likely, the reference is to the original Tower of Babel story, where people went from speaking one language to many. Google’s goal seems to be to reverse this by giving people one massive communications ziggurat.

Those who want to see if this plays out or if Google gets smote from above, keep your attention on the Google I/O event happening in San Francisco on May 15 to 17.
