Kick Karaoke Butt With The Just Sing It! App

Just Sing It

You may not have Blake Shelton, Usher, Shakira, or Adam Levine fighting over you on The Voice, but that doesn’t stop you from belting out tunes. Now, with the Just Sing It! iOS app, you can hold your own singing competitions with friends to find out which one of you is the best karaoke singer. Or at least who’s the best at getting others to guess the name of a song based on your warbling.

Maybe you can stand on your own and blow the virtual crowds away with your singing prowess, but just in case you can’t, the app has multiple sound effects to help put you up against the best autotuned stars of the day. Feel good enough about your take that it warrants sharing it? Then, do exactly that with Just Sing It‘s different social network features. The main driving point of this app though might be its ability to let you challenge your friends, and complete strangers, to karaoke competitions of your own making.

The game works much the same way that the once-all-the-rage Draw Something did, but with singing instead of crudely drawn pictures. You sing songs to other users, and then they try to guess the name of the songs sung. Listen to karaoked songs as often as you want before making your guess or passing on your turn. Chosen words that help guide your guesses appear at the bottom of the screen.

Luckily, you’re also allowed to choose your own music genre, so you don’t get stuck trying to identify Carrie Underwood songs if you’re not exactly a country music fan (or The Black Keys if you’re not a blues indie rock listener). Again like Draw Something, which this app owes a lot of credit to, you’re given three songs to select from, with more coins given to songs with higher difficulties. Luckier still, you’re not asked to know the lyrics of the songs as Just Sing It! displays the lyrics of the chosen song as the song plays.

You can then make the guessing game even more difficult by adding those previously-mentioned audio effects to alter your voice into that of another sex, a robot, or even the squeaky yet dulcet tones of a hamster.

Since its launch a couple of weeks ago, Just Sing It! has found its way to the number one position in the App Store’s music category, users have recorded a total of 500,000 songs,  and the app has managed to raise $1 million in funding from such vaunted sources as Tribeca Venture Partners, Lerer Ventures, m8 Capital, Eniac Ventures, Dennis Phelps of Institutional Venture Partners, and Bob Geiman of Redwood Technology Ventures. That’s a lot of ventures.

Next time you find yourself singing along to a song in the car or the shower, quickly pull out your phone. You could become a karaoke champ.
