Good job Mr Complainy. Half the things you mention I’ve never had a problem with. The thing with Google Reader is unnecessary. And you can change the order of your que. And you can play one podcast at a time.
Of course, this is all moot, because I can’t find Listen in the Play Store. I found this looking for a way to transfer Listen from my Droid to Droid x2.

Google currently has listen and reader, both play audio and do so badly. They need to get with it and put audio rss feeds in one seamless location. I say put it in Google Music Play. Then let content providers post into the Play store. I don’t need another half hearted option I need a definitive go to.

I’m old school with podcasts. I use an RSS reader that handles attachments, and copy the files into a directory on the SD card on my phone and then use Google Music to play it back and just simply delete the file when I’m done. I can’t stream on the NYC subway so this works out for me.
