Star Trek Into Darkness Geolocation App Detects Fictional Locales For Points

Star Trek, Into Darkness. Or Batman Rises. Or Battle LA. Or The Raid. Maybe Inception?

Star Trek, Into Darkness. Or Batman Rises. Or Battle LA. Or The Raid. Maybe Inception?

The guessing game is on for what’s going to happen in Star Trek Into Darkness from all the numerous previews, trailers, and sneak peeks of said movie. Somehow, the Enterprise will have to crash and stay hidden in the Pacific Ocean. Somehow, Benedict Cumberbatch will manifest some kind of healing powers (or the power of convincing incredibly gullible parents that he can cure their weakling child, but would you trust him?) and wind up in a funky futuristic glass cell. Spock will attempt Pon Farr in a lava field.

Know what won’t be in this movie?

Khan Noonien Singh.

Don’t look so shocked. Captain Kirk won’t meet you for several years.

Will not, shall not, cannot.

Get used to it, helmet-heads. This is not the time for a reboot of The Wrath Of Khan. If you think it is, you are a false Trekkie. What you want is your childhood back. You want a Thundercats movie. You want to play with Transformers. You want to play Pac-Man all over again. You want Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You need a good kicking, is what you need.

Take this funky app for your iPhone and Android device instead

With the Star Trek Into Darkness app, you can track down movie posters, photos, and comic book covers via your device’s built-in camera for points. Also, the app has an audio scanner that listens to your computer or other device to match trailer soundtracks. The app sports a relatively new feature called geofencing, an extension of geolocation, which automatically alerts users when they near a designated place. If you visit The Presidio in San Francisco, which the app says is the future location of Starfleet Academy, the app detects your location and you get 20 points. Come May, the app will let you know when you get close to a movie theater, so that you won’t miss the next showing of the new Star Trek moviefilm for theatres.

Using the special Star Trek Into Darkness app, a “first-of-its kind movie app” according to Paramount, fans were able to “unlock movie tickets for showtimes on Wednesday, May 15 at 8:00 p.m. -– two days ahead of the film’s scheduled release on Friday, May 17.” The May 15 release will happen in IMAX 3D.

J.J. Abrams returns to direct Star Trek Into Darkness off a screenplay by Alex Kurtzman, Damon Lindelof and Roberto Orci. It stars Chris Pine, Benedict Cumberbatch, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho, Anton Yelchin and Simon Pegg. Star Trek Into Darkness opens in theaters (regular and IMAX 3D) on May 17, 2013.
