Racing for Third Place: Is Windows Phone 7 Being Hobbled?

Have You Seen This Screen?

PC Magagzine has an excellent article about Windows Phone 7’s problems in the marketplace, and it’s one that brings up familiar issues.

Back when WebOS was owned by Palm and hailed as the Next Big Thing, posters at sites like Precentral and everythingpre would report being actively steered away from the Pre Plus on Verizon for the Motorola Droid. I personally tried this out with Sprint and the then fading original Pre, and I experienced an attempt to convince me that the HTC Hero (which was not without her own issues) was a far better deal.

It seems potential Windows Phone 7 users are seeing the same push for something other than what they came in for.  There were reports of no demo units and active attempts to push another handset.

With a mobile market largely dominated by Apple, and with Google a close second, it’s critical that any other potential OSes can compete for the third place spot without excessive barriers.

Or in other words, just sell me the phone I want.
