"Nexus

Were you impressed by yesterday’s Optimus G review, but don’t feel like going on Sprint? Good news. For for a mere $50 (after MIR), you can find yourself with a brand new Nexus 4. That’s a great deal on what is arguably the best phone on T-Mobile’s network. In fact, even at $100 before the rebate, you’re getting a good deal (as long as you don’t mind being under contract for two years).

What does the Nexus 4 have to do with the Optimus G? They’re almost the same phone. The Nexus 4 also has the same mind-boggling quad-core processor, a stunning 4.7″ IPS display, and a nice sized battery. It does lack a few things, some positive and some negative. On the positive side, the Nexus 4 runs pure, unskinned Android, and the phone ships with the latest Android version (Jelly Bean). One of the main pluses of Nexus devices is you always know you’re going to get the latest and greatest. On the minus side of things, there’s only 8 GB of storage and only an 8P MP camera.

The biggest differential though, is that the Nexus 4 doesn’t have LTE. Many reviewers are annoyed by this, but considering that LTE is still being rolled out in parts of the U.S., I can grudgingly see Google’s point. However, you can get good speeds if you use T-Mobile, as Nexus 4 uses that carrier’s HSPA+ network insanely well. Here in Houston, that network sometimes tops AT&T’s LTE speeds (and it beats the heck out of Sprint).

It’s hard not to be a fan of Google’s Nexus line. Basically a “showcase” concept, different partners manufacture a phone to serve as the best example of what Android can do. Yes, you can buy the 4 unlocked on Google Play, but if you want to save a bit in the short term, this is a solid deal on a solid phone.
