Blacks in Technology (BiT) is a coalition of technology industry leaders committed to highlighting the black community’s impact in technology-related industries, products, and services. The result of this mission, increasing visible diversity in the tech industry, is extremely valuable on a number of levels.

For many people, discussing race in any capacity is uncomfortable and potentially something to be avoided. However, BiT has created a safe space for the discussion to take place. By highlighting positive achievements, the organization encourages the audience to participate and celebrate."66491_330019953775956_315075642_n"

However, one distinct area in which BiT appears to be underperforming is on the SXSW schedule. Although several high-profile events are being held, event goers are unlikely to know anything about them without going directly to the BiT website. Currently, the SXSW schedule holds multiple time slots for “BiT (Blacks in Technology) Programming” containing only a general description of events. It’s unfortunate that an organization whose mission revolves around technology wouldn’t make the most out of advertising themselves online, especially when SXSW is its self-declared “marquee event.”

BiT is hosting several panels and events throughout SXSW including discussions with scholars, athletes, and political figures. Detailed information about these events and more can be found on the BiT website.
