Pre-SXSW: Marvel Comics Is A Big Tease For SXSW Interactive

What exactly is Marvel planning for SXSW 2013? For the last few weeks, the entertainment giant has been hinting at a mysterious first it plans to announce at the festival. Last year saw the release of Marvel ReEvolution during the SXSW Interactive’s ScreenBurn Arcade (now simply called SXSW Gaming Expo). Marvel ReEvolution was revealed to be Marvel’s new digital comics format (called Infinite Comics) and Marvel’s Augmented Reality app, which allows you to “unlock exclusive content, such as video recaps, character bios, creator commentaries, and more” when you scan specific Marvel products. All that’s known about Marvel’s news this time around is that it has something to do with Marvel Now!, the 2012 relaunch (not reboot) of many of its ongoing comic books including Captain America, Uncanny Avengers (mixing Avengers and X-Men teams together), Iron Man, and Guardians of the Galaxy.

First, came this vague tease full of well-known and less well-known characters’ names (Doop? Nice.):

Marvel First

That tease was followed by another that simply replaced the characters’ names with the names of creators responsible for their stories, but this time, it’s made clear that something will launch during SXSW Interactive.

Marvel wasn’t nearly done being enigmatic though because the company released this image today.

Marvel Counts SXSW

Find out more as Marvel Entertainment takes Austin, Texas by storm at the Marvel: House of Ideas panel at the SXSW Gaming Expo on Sunday, March 10th at 1pm (CST)!

What could Marvel have scheduled to debut this time? Speculation runs from this having something to do with the huge Age of Ultron story that’s set to run through the majority of Marvel’s books in the upcoming months to another huge announcement to its digital comics line a la Marvel ReEvolution. Counting the number of hatch marks in the last teaser adds up to 52, and that just happens to be the same number of years since the launch of Fantastic Four, which is also seen as the launch of the modern incarnation of Marvel Comics. The specificity of numbers 1 and 52 isn’t likely to be coincidental.

Techcitement will stake out a spot at the panel come March 10, so stay tuned to find out exactly what Marvel wants you to know it claims to be first at.
