MIT Makes Real-Time Hologram, Use Wrong Star Wars Reference

As reported at NewScientist, smart-type people at MIT have made a huge leap in the possibility of real-time holograms. The MIT  folks use, among other things, a hacked Kinect, proving once again that the Xbox 360’s controllerless controller is wasted on dance games. This is rather amazing technology. It’s extremely early, but it’s one step away from being able to have your presence felt at a business meeting, other than video conferencing, without actually being there. A child might not be able to hug their soldier-at-war parent, but being able to see them seemingly in three-dimensional space might have a greater degree of emotional resonance than just a video call. There’s only one problem. In their tech demo, the team at MIT recreated the “Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope” bit from Star Wars, except the Holy Trilogy has scenes that actually demonstrate the concept they are trying to create much better. Specifically in The Empire Strikes Back, where Vader communicates with the AT-AT or where Vader talks to the Emperor, as seen here recreated in Legos.
