SnApp Judgments: AllSport GPS PRO

Every night at 12:15 AM Pacific, Amazon gives away a free paid app through their Amazon app store. As I am usually awake at 12:15 AM Pacific, why not let you know if today’s app is useful, or just more clutter in your app drawer?

Today’s free app is AllSport GPS PRO by Trimble Navigation Limited which usually runs for $3.99. As the name suggests, the app is a sports-related GPS. Create a map for a variety of activities, from mountain biking to parkour, either using the app or through the AllSportGPS website, then follow the map and track your activities via the GPS. There’s offline map caching, social media integration, even camera permissions so you can take pictures or video while on your excursion.

It seems a bit more full-featured than some similar apps that have been offered in the past. The only drawback I can see so far, sitting as motionless as I can right now, is that when the app starts up, it’s kind of ugly. It gets better once the GPS tracking actually starts, but the opening screens are rather drab. Maybe they draw on the battery less that way? That’s the problem with GPS apps — combine them with music, or even worse, streaming music, and it sucks the juice out of a phone faster than a six year old with a box of Hi-C. Which actually, isn’t particularly fast, because they always need help inserting the bendy straw.
