Domino’s Pizza + Singing Anime Character = Hypnotically Awkward Video

Normally, we at Techcitement blanch at the thought of publicizing a company’s obvious attempt at viral-video marketing, but sometimes the stars align to make the perfect mix of humor, marketing, and startled disbelief. Such is the case with this beautifully odd video from the best terrible pizza franchise in your town, Domino’s Pizza.

Now I know what you’re thinking, but yes, this is totally real. “Scott, president of Domino’s” is, in fact, Scott (Oelkers), president of Domino’s (Japan). You may remember a year and a half ago when Scott announced that Domino’s Japan was going to open a Domino’s on the moon. Hatsune Miku is a big thing in Japan and around the world, so this is something of a “get” for Domino’s. Kudos to Oelkers’s team for managing to bring together cardboard pizza and a worldwide phenomenon to make an app that might not actually suck if you think about it.

The Domino’s App featuring Hatsune Miku is available for iOS (5.0 or greater), though obviously most of the functionality is lost outside of Japan. In spite of myself, the 3D pizza box concert is actually inventive; it kind of makes me want to book a flight to Tokyo and order up some Domino’s just to see how well it works.

For now, we in the U.S. have to watch the Miku from afar, consoling ourselves by making fun of a successful twenty-first century marketing video.

So yeah, you win, Domino’s.
