Tumblr Breaks 100 Million User Mark, Follow These Blogs To Celebrate

Tumblr 100 M

Without any fanfare, Tumblr managed to tick up to and past the 100 million blog mark this week. The burgeoning internet giant, founded in 2007 by David Karp, has gone on to have more than 44.6 billion posts by its many users. Blogs range from the celebrity-run kind to social movements to fandom-obsessed (Hello, Whovians, Sherlockians, and Supernatural people) to the obvious sex-fueled postings. To celebrate this occasion, Techcitement (which has a Tumblr blog if its own) has gathered together a few of its favorite Tumblr blogs to recommend to you.

John and Hank Green, Tumblrs Extraordinaire

Brothers Green, otherwise known as the Vlog Brothers, have made a name for themselves in the Nerdfighter community, which started off as a series of YouTube videos. The community has blossomed into one that has even gained the attention of President Obama during a Google Fireside Hangout.

John Green’s Tumblr and Hank Green’s Tumblr both have a strong emphasis on pop culture, as expected from two guys who coined the term nerdfighter, but the two often dip their respective toes into political waters from time to time.

Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer, Tumblrs by Marriage

Neil Gaiman is most known as the writer of books such as American Gods and Neverwhere, along with creating Sandman for DC Comics/Vertigo Comics. The writer also happens to be married to Amanda Palmer, who is likely most known as a member of  The Dresden Dolls and for her solo music career. Between the two of them, they manage to tell stories and dispense sage advice. They’re also both incredibly open to interaction with their fans through Tumblr.

Shaming Your Dogs for a Good Cause

What started out as a way to spread silly pictures of dogs (and sometimes other furry animals) destroying property and looking remorseful about it on Facebook has become a full-fledged internet juggernaut. The website now also emphasizes showing rescued dogs and posts adoption notices regularly on Fridays.

The Most Adorable Superheroes Like to Tumbl

The Justice League as eight year olds. That’s the simple premise behind this charming weekly webcomic by independent comic book artist Yale Stewart. Join Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Power Girl (the strip’s replacement for Aquaman to have more girls in there) as they battle for dominance on the playground against villains like Lex Luthor, Captain Cold, Cheetah, and more from the comics. For now, JL8 isn’t connected to DC Comics other than acting as a homage, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine the company offering to publish Stewart’s work through a digital means at some point. As examples, here are a couple of strips taken from the storyline of Diana’s (Wonder Woman’s) birthday party.

Be Ahead of the Meme

Never miss an altered picture, timely webcomic, autocorrect fail, silly animation, or spot-on mashup again with Pleated Jeans. Better yet, Pleated Jeans makes sure to cite sources for its posts, something many other Tumblr blogs fail to do, so you can lose yourself even more in the Tumblr spiral.

Less Talk, More Things

Sure, Tumblr can be a great tool to reach out to others and use as a personal space to write long diatribes on social injustices that may in turn be seen by thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of other people. But Tumblr is also a great place to discover cool gadgets, and that’s what Disruptism aims to showcase. Keeping the words to a minimum, this Tumblr blog provides videos and pictures of some of the latest scientific trends and technological accomplishments.

News about The News

There’s no limit to the news sources and types of news you can receive on Tumblr. From stalwarts like NBC News and The Guardian to the more divisive Tumblr homes of Think Progress, National Review, Blogging via Typewriter, the Christian Science Monitor, and The Atlantic, the options available to you cover the full political spectrum. Luckily, Tumblr makes it easy to receive updates from all of the sources in one feed so you don’t have to be accused of having one-sided viewpoints.

Tell us about some of your favorite Tumblr blogs (including your own) in the comments below, so we can further our addiction to the Tumblr scroll.
