SnApp Judgments: Frogger

Every night at 12:15 AM Pacific, Amazon gives away a free paid app through their Amazon app store. As I am usually awake at 12:15 AM Pacific, why not let you know if today’s app is useful, or just more clutter in your app drawer?

“Jerry, I’ve been preparing for this moment my entire life.”  — George Costanza, Seinfeld S9E18, “The Frogger”

You’ll have to pardon the Seinfeld quotes in today’s SnApp Judgment — today’s free app is Frogger by Konami Digital Entertainment, which usually runs $.99. If you’ve never played any version of Frogger before… what the hell is wrong with you? It’s Frogger! One of the seminal arcade classics! The one good thing that George Costanza ever did with his entire life! “Oh, I was unstoppable. Perfect combination of Mountain Dew and mozzarella. Just a right amount of grease on the joystick.”

Seriously, if you have ever considered yourself a gamer, you should have played Frogger at some point. This version for Android feels like a fairly faithful adaptation. A couple things have changed — the graphics are better (although I almost wish there was a 80s graphics mode, just for nostalgia’s sake), there are a variety of touch controls (make sure you select the right one, it defaults on slide, not tap, and I thought the game was broken at first), and a phantom mode, letting you race against your old games, which is cool. The only negative is they changed the iconic opening music, heard here in Buckner and Garcia’s Froggy’s Lament. As free video games go, this one is pretty awesome.
