SnApp Judgments: Space War HD

Every night at 12:15 AM Pacific, Amazon gives away a free paid app through their Amazon app store. As I am usually awake at 12:15 AM Pacific, why not let you know if today’s app is useful, or just more clutter in your app drawer?

Today’s free app is Space War HD by Virtual GS, which usually runs for $.99. It’s a top-down shmup, something akin to… oh, let’s say 1941, except crappier. I hope you like shooting at rocks, because that’s all you do for the first minute or so. Eventually some spaceships show up, but by that point, I’m wondering what the rocks did to me that I am so pissed off that I’m committing rock genocide.

On the plus side, the sound is pretty awesome. The music is a chiptune that riffs somewhere between Axel F and The Peter Gunn Theme. And whenever you get a power up, a voice tells you what it is. Except the voice sounds computer generated, which is odd because they could have easily just recorded someone saying the name of the power up, but instead it’s this bored computer voice that gets the cadence of the words slightly wrong. But for some bizarre reason, I enjoy that.

    Hi, thanks for the review.

The rocks stage is just the first stage to get you started, there are 10+ more stages including 2 boss levels! Things will get harder and harder so if you can’t get passed the first stage, you are not prepared for the latter stage.
