Tablet Thursday Digest: Facebook Fakeout, Streaking, and Walmart

You know how we were saying Facebook needed to get their Android act together? It gets a tad worse. Bad enough that it looked like Facebook was going to make hardware makers look into their own app solutions (ala HP and WebOS), now it looks more like it’s actually aimed at Android. That’s right, Android users. Feel free to take it personally as Zuckerberg’s baby releases an update to their iOS client that includes a hidden iPad version. There are already several guides online to show users how to unlock the full potential of this update.

The first step is to rub some of this on an Android user.

A few days ago, there were musings that Dell might create an end-of-life to their 5″ Streak tablet. The poorly received tablet suffered from not quite being a phone and not quite being a tablet, as well as a version of Android that was not so much “long in the tooth” as it was borderline archaic. What we weren’t expecting was for T-Mobile to join the party and by  pulling the 7″ Streak as well. Considering it got almost as little love as the 5″ Streak (ie, next to none), that’s not too much of a shock.

Less of a streak than a skidmark, really.

You can still snag a Streak at Radio Shack or directly from Dell, or you can wait on the Dell Streak 10 to hit the States and hope that this time it’s just right.

In 10″ tablet news, BGR has some more FCC Evidence of HTC’s “Puccini“. Big brother to their 7” Flyer tablet, it will have the same stylus technology and the familiar Sense overlay. Hopefully it will also bring Honeycomb to the table as well.

Remember when Sense was called HTC Home. I'm old.

Finally, the BBC has released their much-anticipated Global iPlayer app for iOS, albeit only in 11 European countries so far. For about 10 Euro a month, viewers can get access to iPlayer’s content, normally only available in the UK. Yes, you can always switch your browser’s country code to get around it, but isn’t it nicer to have a legit and legal way to access the latest episode of Doctor Who? No word on a date for the Global Player’s arrival in the United States, but it’s indeed a matter of “when” and not “if” now. Until the release, you simply have to find some other way to compare the STARZ and BBC versions of Torchwood: Miracle Day.

Techcitement does not approve of naughtiness.

In other streaming news, Walmart entered the streaming video game this week with Vudu. While this is only marketed at desktops and connected TVs, it turns out that it can also work on some tablets, including the HP Touchpad. With other services limiting what tablets can run their apps, it’d be interesting to see if Vudu takes off as an alternative.
