Woot The Heck Is Going On With The HP Touchpad?

Yesterday, I noted that HP’s Touchpad tablet was going on sale for the weekend. Today I wake up to see that internet retailer Woot.com has beaten Staples and HP’s $100 off by pricing the Touchpad at $379.99.

For those unfamiliar with Woot, they’re one of the first of the deal-a-day sites. Bought out by Amazon a little over a year ago, a lot of their products tend to be items that aren’t moving on Amazon. That leads to a lot of chatter that listing the Touchpad is a sign of product failure.

What’s fascinating to me is what’s going down on the Woot forums. Normally, when a tech item is listed, it gets savaged there. People will go out of their way to point out that it’s not a great deal, there’s something wrong with the product, etc. In this case,  there’s more positive than negative. The closest people have gotten to saying “this is a bad price” is pointing out that Staple’s sale gets you the 16 GB for $299 with the coupon. Except no-one can find a Staples that has it in stock. I myself was unable to find it within a hundred miles of Manhattan.

Usually an item with such positive  reception on the Woot forums moves fast. This time though, the Touchpad is just sitting there. For all their enthusiasm, few seem to be biting. This might be something for HP to ponder.

Oh, and in case you’re wondering, my Touchpad will be here after processing and shipping.
