Upcoming Photography App Lets You Erase People From Existence

As a camera enthusiast and gadget junkie, I recently stumbled upon a rather interesting concept for a smartphone app that could revolutionize vacation photos. Scalado Remove essentially allows you to remove people and other moving objects from the frame of your picture by using multiple exposures to build a background matte. Using this matte, you can essentially erase parts of the image and expose a clean background, getting those pesky other people out of your photos. I can’t really do the explanation justice in words, so take a look at the following video:

This appears to be just a demonstration of the concept and is not yet an actual working app. While I’m impressed with the idea and theory behind it, I wonder how well this could work in the real world. For starters, without a tripod, you have to trust that your hands can hold the camera still enough to get similar looking exposures. Then, you have to hope that there’s enough of a gap in between people for the background to be “seen” at some point by the app (busy streets need not apply). Also, if someone is sitting in the background through all the frames, you won’t be able to delete them.

Even with those caveats, this is a great concept that I’m excited to see happen. If nothing else, it can be the answer to that occasional photobomber.
