Virgin Mobile, a pre-pay division of Sprint Wireless, has announced that it will add the iPhone 4 and 4S to their handset offerings as of June 29. This comes scant days after Cricket Wireless, another pre-pay giant, made a similar announcement. All this pre-pay action is making some of us wonder what’s in store for June 11’s WWDC event.
While hardware is the same, pricing is not. Cricket will be charging $400 for an 8 GB iPhone 4 and $500 for the 4S. Virgin will be charging a bit more at $549 for the 4 and a massive $649 for the 4S. These are pretty much inline with the cost of an unlocked GSM iPhone. The savings with Virgin comes in the monthly price. Cricket will charge $55 a month for the privilege of iPhone ownership. Virgin is offering three plans, all with unlimited text and data. The most expensive, including unlimited voice, is $50.
Is a $60 a year savings over Cricket, plus no data throttling, worth paying $150 more for an iPhone? What do you think?
